A WEEK IN THE LIFE OF A RECRUITMENT CONSULTANT

by | Sep 18, 2018 | Recruitment and Executive Search

How looks one week of a recruitment consultant?

Being a recruitment consultant means I interview people daily and learn every day about their jobs and their businesses. But they don’t really have the opportunity to learn about mine. If you are interested in knowing more, then continue reading

Recruitment consultant has every day different

First of all, it is very difficult to describe my typical day because each day is very different from the other. And I really mean it! Typically, I would have a few assignments going on simultaneously and they are each in different stages of the cycle.

For recruitment assignments, most of my time goes to selecting the most suitable candidate, of course. But that is not just about face-to-face interviews. That includes pre-screening, phone interviews and, only after that, face-to-face interviews, followed by assessment and reference checking to finish the process. At the same time, I need to keep my clients informed, so I do regular reporting and teleconferences with client representatives.

On top of that, I need to think about the future and keep in touch with our clients by conducting business development and sales activities. That means a lot of phone calls, client meetings, and presentations. So, if I were to summarize at a very high level, I spend a lot of time on the phone and a huge amount of time meeting people. Be it, candidates or clients.

Being social is the key for a recruitment consultant

It is a very social job. You have to like people, definitely! You should like meeting them and you should like talking to them. First and foremost, you need to be good at listening and asking questions.

You can easily imagine that during a week you can have 10-15 meetings face-to-face (including candidates and clients). Next, you have several phone interviews, a few client teleconferences and/or meetings, and on top of it all, you need time to prepare for each of them and write summaries, report, candidates reports etc. You also need time to learn and study about your client, businesses etc. You need time to think and brainstorm about the best way to find the proper candidates for specific assignments, how to attract them, which method to use etc.

You need to accommodate to both client and candidate

There are weeks when you do very long days because you always have a deadline from the client. And because the client pays you, you work your “ass off” to be on time and keep your promises. If a candidate is busy and cannot meet you during normal business hours, you do whatever to accommodate and meet him in the evening or even during the weekend. You do this because there is a client waiting for your outcome. There is your client, whose business results can be affected by this recruit, who could even fail if they do not have the right people on time.
Do you have a candidate from another time zone? Then you have very early morning calls or late evening calls. Again, you need to be very flexible. The client expects you to deliver the results.

Many times our clients are not from a nearby city. They may be from another part of the country or even abroad. We do travel a lot.
And we do travel a lot to meet the candidates, too. But luckily, some amount of traveling can be decreased nowadays due to our great technology tools.

Days for a recruitment consultant are:

  • long and irregular
  • full of meetings
  • full of discussions
  • very interesting and challenging
  • all about people
  • never the same
  • full of opportunities to learn something new every single day
  • full of changes
  • full of deadlines
  • full of responsibilities -> we do make quite serious decisions on behalf of our clients

I learn constantly

And what is beautiful about this job is that I most likely know what your workday looks like.
Yes, I do meet people from different industries and different professions and hear what they do daily. For me, it is constantly learning about new industries and new functions and professions. It is definitely challenging enough and very interesting.
And the fact that I can make a difference and influence your business outcomes by my recommendations makes it very meaningful.

With passionate regards ,-)
